Hi there! We’re Rob and Sam from Cornwall and we’d like to tell you a little bit about the journey we’ve been on to get us to this point via the use of a little backstory…
Enjoy.

It was the summer of 2016, and we’d both been actively coaching various populations, from active adults, recreational athletes and local semi-pro clubs, across varying sports.
We received an email from what is now the GB surfing team manager asking if we could run some physical performance workshops for the up and coming pro junior talent across the UK. Of course we said ‘yes’. Times and locations were locked in and we got to work, delivering a flurry of hour long sessions exploring movement, strength and power qualities with a crew of twenty or so young super talented surfers, that at the time were mixing it up on a National and International stage.
It became very apparent very quickly that their exposure to physical development away from their sport was limited to none, and coupled with the early stages of growth and maturation kicking in, basic athletic tasks proved a real challenge. It was clear that these young athletes potential was being severely hampered and that didn’t sit well with us, and if we were seeing this in this group, that surely must mean there was a massive number of youngsters out there in the same boat.
So what were we going to do about it?
The light bulb moment emerged right then and we took the plunge in setting up our first ever youth athlete training programme… Btw… At this point we had no idea how were going to market this, but we knew we had to do something to provide the youth of the South West a platform to perform.
After a few Instagram and Facebook posts, some emails and conversations, we had managed to put together a “discovery presentation’ for parents and youth athletes alike. To our surprise, across three separate presentations, we had about thirty sets of parents turn up. We talked about all things physical development, had a Q and A, and managed to ‘sign’ ten youth athletes to our new programme, which at that time was being held in a rented college gym.
We were up and running and little did we know, we’d started something that would prove to have massive impact and amazing income for all involved. eight years down the road is now serving well over 100 youngsters from multiple sports across two of our own gyms, employs four coaches and is a flourishing business that grows year on year.
Did we make any mistakes along the way?
Absolutely loads!!! But that only improved what we did. We always knew we could coach but our business knowledge and marketing skills were, well, pretty non-existent at the time. But over time we scoured the net and reached out to multiple connections, to learn the art of marketing and therefore carve out a route expanding our business.

Regular holiday speed camps are added in for bigger impact and income, and our CTC parent programme is full to brim…
In a nutshell, the business is thriving.

The Child to Champion Franchise Team is made up of three individuals passionate about youth athlete development and business development. Rob Smaldon, Sam Guy and Brendan Chaplin have been involved in coaching collectively for over 40 years and have actively worked with thousands of individuals across a huge range of sport.
Rob and Sam are the original founders of Child to Champion, and have made considerable local success with it as a coaching service and business. They have been connected with Brendan professionally for well over a decade now from both educational and business purposes. Brendan has been a massive part of the programme’s success with ongoing support which has helped lead us to where we are today. He’s also the original founder and owner of Strength and conditioning Education, a company that has brought athlete development qualifications to tens of thousands of coaches across the Uk and beyond.
Collectively our vision for the much needed programme to reach every corner of the globe is in motion, and over the next five to ten years we will see this happen.
The Child to champion programme
The Child to Champion youth athlete development programme is a youth athlete strength and conditioning curriculum based around three key pillars... Foundation, Development, and High Performance.

Every child that joins your programme has the opportunity to move through the curriculum and become equipped with all the necessary physical and mental skills for enhanced sports performance, with reduced likelihood of injury.
The programme is timetabled across the whole year, with a break at Christmas and every child is required to attend at least one session per week, with an option to come twice or even three times.
As with anything, consistency is king and committed attendance is the cornerstone of each child’s development. Regular performance testing and growth monitoring ensures each individual is on track and hold’s the coach a accountable for programme delivery.
Ensuring children are present week in week out will catapult them to physical awesomeness, and lifelong habits that will set them up fantastically well for the adult chapter of their LTAD journey.
We’ll show you how to immediately implement strategies at home to start combatting these issues!
